Smiling is a wonderful thing. It can reduce stress, make you more attractive, calm you down, lift a bad mood- you can even make another person happy with a smile!
Smiling has also been proven to improve your health as the endorphins released when you smile can lower blood pressure, reducing levels of stress hormones such as cortisol, dopamine and adrenaline. Furthermore, in a recent survey- it was discovered that those that frequently smiled were more likely to be promoted in their work than those that didn’t.
Charles Darwin himself understood the benefits of smiling- he studied the smile, developing his- ‘Facial Feedback Response Theory’, which suggests that the act of smiling actually makes us feel better. Here he discovered that even faking a smile made you happier- he wrote, “Even the stimulation of emotion tends to arouse it in our minds.”
Still, only 30% of us smile just 20 times a day and around 14% of us smile less than five times a day. Compare that with the fact that children smile over 400 times a day, and you begin to realise why we smile more, and feel happier in their company.
Interestingly, further British research found that one smile can release the same level of brain stimulation as 2000 bars of chocolate (as revealed in Ron Gutman’s Ted Talk on Smiling) - so not only can it improve your health, life and happiness – it could help you eat less chocolate!
How often do you smile?
Not all of us are benefiting from smiling- in fact, a large number of us do it very little because we are ashamed, self-conscious or simply unhappy with our teeth. In actual fact, a huge 48% of the population in the UK are unhappy with their smile for this very reason- and consequently they miss out on all of the natural benefits smiling brings.
If you happen to be one of these people- rest assured, there are a number of ways in which your smile can be improved. For example, you may be someone who is self-conscious about your smile because your front teeth are misaligned, crowded or crooked. Well, one simple solution to your problem is by having braces fitted.
