If you have a fear or phobia of dentists, you are not alone. Often known as ‘Dentophobia’- fear of the dentist is extremely common, in fact, according to the British Dental Association, around 12% of people in the UK suffer from extreme dental anxiety and 25% of the population suffer from some sort of anxiety or fear before visiting the dentist.
Whether it’s due to a fear of needles, the sounds or smells of a clinic, or even a previous negative experience, a large portion of the population put off attending appointments for many reasons -often to the detriment of their own dental health.
We pay great attention to ensuring you are entirely comfortable in our care and as a result, we have vast experience -across the whole team- in helping our patients manage their phobias and fears. As a previous winner of the ‘Best Provider of Patient Care’ award (South East) at the ‘Dentistry Awards’, we pride ourselves on our methods of helping patients to overcome fears.
We provide a calming environment where our patients can feel relaxed, you can wait in comfort with a variety of beverages & magazines to choose from helping you to unwind before your visit.
Dr Sanders takes extra care with any patients who have concerns and helps to set their mind at rest by explaining every single step of the treatment and can even demonstrate procedures via our bespoke animation software, so you know exactly what to expect.
As a team we understand that patients are often anxious and sometimes terrified of a dental environment so we do our upmost to take things slowly and go at a pace that you are comfortable with. We have worked hard to design the practice in a way that makes it feel comfortable and non-clinical in the hope that patients will feel more at ease. We have flat screen TV’s built into the ceiling allowing you to choose a film or a television channel to be distracted by if necessary, and the music of your choice is also on offer during any treatment.
Dental Confidence has also won awards for its dedication to state of the art technology and equipment, which means that we can offer minimally invasive procedures and techniques that guarantee precision and accuracy. This helps us to provide you with a greater variety of options to suit your individual needs.
Furthermore, Dr Peter Sanders, is renowned as one of the UK’s leading implant dentists, and has been placing dental implants for more than 30 years, so you can rest assured that you are in very capable hands. (Read more about Dr Sanders’ experience here).
The following patient report demonstrates clearly how the Dental Confidence team approaches with great sensitivity, the treatment procedure for a patient who has a dental phobia.
Patient Report : Terry Suddaby
“I have had a dental phobia for many years. I suffer from terrible anxiety and fear when it comes to visiting the dentist. Some of the dentists I had visited in the past, unfortunately seemed to dismiss my anxieties, and weren’t very supportive of my phobia.
After experiencing problems with root canals and eventually loosing teeth, I decided I wanted to do something about it. I went on the Internet and researched the dentists who specifically dealt with patients who have dental phobias – and this is how I came across Dr Sanders.
When I met him I was immediately confident in his professionalism. The way he spoke to me and explained everything so clearly, he made me feel calm and reassured. I immediately trusted him and knew he wouldn’t push me into having things done I didn’t want.
I am based in London, but after meeting Dr Sanders, I knew he was the implant dentist for me and decided that I would travel to his practice in Southampton. When I arrived, everyone in his team was so friendly, helpful and had such a personal approach, including Tracey, the Dental Nurse, who was supportive in every way. The lovely pleasant surroundings also made me feel so relaxed and reassured.
During appointments, Peter always has time for questions- there was never a rush. And he explained things in simple terms, without being patronising. He even walked me through the surgical procedure using illustrations on an iPad, which helped a great deal.
In the past, just before my appointments I had often been too nervous to go through with the treatment but Peter had said, if this was to happen, it would be fine. Of course, it didn’t. The surgery itself went so smoothly and I was delighted with the results. Prior to my visit Peter had said, ‘tell me what you music you like, I’ll have it ready’- and he programmed in Mozart for me.
After the treatment, I looked in the mirror-and it was very strange- it was like having my smile and mouth back. I was over the moon. It looked so real- and felt very unusual not to have any gaps.
Afterwards, I was looked after so well I felt that if anything went wrong, the whole team were available. Some people do the work and leave you to it- but the Dental Confidence team kept a close eye on me, and even emailed to make sure I was happy.
I would definitely recommend Peter to anyone who has a fear of dentists. There is a website that specifically caters for dental-phobics like myself. I have added his details to the website and recommended that if anyone would like implants, but is too scared – they should definitely visit Dental Confidence.”
